WORKSHOP DETAILS

The workshop’s theme of 'Object' focuses on finding content in the things/objects that surround us. Participants will select an object to work with, exploring its identity through memories, provenance, history, cultural significance, and context.

The workshop aims to enhance artists’ professional skills and deepen their understanding of identifying and selecting content for artmaking. It will cover conceptual articulation through choice of object, materials, and techniques, as well as the effective execution of ideas. Participants will develop advanced experimental thinking and creativity, focusing on individual art production, techniques, and thought processes.

Suitable for both upcoming and established artists, Unisa Visual Arts alumni and current students are particularly encouraged to attend. Upcoming artists will benefit from learning from more advanced peers, while advanced artists have the opportunity to showcase and expand their current practice. Some Unisa Art lecturers will also participate, offering additional insights. Each participant will produce several artworks during the workshop, with the best pieces exhibited at Unisa. The exhibition setup will take place on Friday afternoon, opening on Saturday, 20 July, at 12 noon.

Conducted in one of Unisa’s large professional studios, Studio B, the workshop provides ample space, tables, chairs, easels, and basins.

There is safe parking on campus close to the workshop venue.

PREPARATION AND MATERIALS NEEDED

• Select an object with specific personal  significance related to an event, relationship, emotion, or other association. Consider its context and origins. Photograph the object and print some photos on photo paper and watercolour paper.
• Bring at least 5 pieces of good paper, any size, not too small.
• Bring one canvas, any size.
• Prepare a large surface by combining several sheets of paper with wood glue to create a thick, sturdy surface. Allow it to dry well before the workshop, possibly clipping or taping it to a surface to dry flat.
• Drawing supplies: Pencils (2B to 8B),  charcoal, and pastels in various colours (grey, black, white, brown, soft blue, soft pink, soft green, soft yellow).
• Eraser.
• Inks and brushes.
• Adhesives (glue, tape, string).
• Kitchen towel.
• Scissors.
• Found materials such as wooden sticks,  plastic straws, or other sturdy materials with linear shapes.
• Coffee and tea will be available; bring  your own mug and eats.
• Wear warm working clothes and shoes.

ABOUT ELFRIEDE

Elfriede is an artist, curator, mentor and Unisa Extraordinary Professor. She has worked for more than 30 years in the art industry, both nationally and internationally. Her artworks have been exhibited at major galleries, museums, universities and art festivals. From May to August 2023 she presented a solo of her own work in Bages, France, and curated an exhibition at the same gallery. She was the overall curator of the KKNK in 2015; curated exhibitions in Belgium, France and Canada; and she has adjudicated at most of the national competitions including Absa l'Atelier, Sasol New Signatures, and the Portrait Award. In 2015 she founded the CAP Institute for Contemporary Art Practice that offers workshops, curated exhibitions and online academic courses in Visual Arts. She continues to receive grants from prestigious institutions, for instance the Presidential PESP Award in 2021. Elfriede is widely known as an empathetic and supportive mentor who has the ability to develop artistic talent in others. She has completed study guidance to more than 30 masters and doctoral students, but also works with professional and upcoming artists to develop technical, conceptual and professional skills. A key strong point is her complex and interdisciplinary frame of reference due to her academic qualifications in various disciplines.
