Target Audience: Art lovers or artists who want to learn how to write about art and want to understand the different styles, conventions and content required.

Course Duration: It is difficult to determine how long it will take you to complete the course. The average time to read through the tutorial material is about 3 hours, but it can be longer, depending on how much time you spend on the links. This Module has much reading to do, so it can actually take you much longer to complete.

MODULE DESCRIPTION:

In this module we consider: Journalistic versus academic writing about art; Different formats, such as the exhibition review; the catalogue essay; the theoretical art essay/academic article on art; and the artist statement;  Various interpretational vantage points such as the biographical, comparative, historical, contextual and theoretical frameworks; Decoloniality as a theoretical framework; and Feminism as a theoretical framework. There is much additional reading included in this module, which serve as examples of good quality writing about art.


What you will learn:

You will gain an overview of the differences between formats in writing about art.

You will start to understand when writing is good and when not.

You will start to understand what is required from the writer in defined contexts.

You will gain a basic understanding of two theoretical frameworks that are prominent in African discourse, namely decoloniality and feminism.

There is an Assignment for this module. It is not compulsory. 

If you are doing the Certificate, you have to complete any seven assignments in order to receive a Certificate.

4. Short Course in Applied Art History  

 

In this Short Course a thematic approach to Art History is followed in order to introduce you to the discipline of Art History. Some key subject areas have been chosen for the five Modules that cuts across arthistorical periods and are relevant to contemporary art practice.

FIVE modules and FIVE assignments are included. The assignments are not compulsory, but if you want to receive a certificate of completion for the Short Course, you have to complete TWO assignments.

  • Several web links are included; please visit these and read through in order to maximise your learning experience.
