MODULE DESCRIPTION:
The theme of art and body is a very broad theme that cuts across disciplines and art movements. This module looks at art and theory relating to figure painting; the terms 'figurative' and 'figural' art; portraiture and 'corporeal' art. The module falls in three parts: Part 1 provides an understanding of the different terminologies relating to art and the body. Part 2 looks at body and identity, portraiture and self-portraiture. Part 3 is concerned with corporeality in art.
What you will learn:
You will gain an understanding of figure painting in art, with its associated terminologies.
You will be able to distinguish different forms of rendering of the human body in art.
You will acquire thematic insight into the history of figure painting and other expressions of art and the body.
You will be able to bring contemporary corporeality in art in context with historical approaches to the body.

There is an Assignment for this module. It is not compulsory.
If you are doing the Certificate, you have to complete any seven assignments in order to receive a Certificate.

4. Short Course in Applied Art History
In this Short Course a thematic approach to Art History is followed in order to introduce you to the discipline of Art History. Some key subject areas have been chosen for the five Modules that cuts across arthistorical periods and are relevant to contemporary art practice.
