The Short Course will equip you with an understanding of basic formal principles in art production. Various fundamental technical and formal aspects are covered. This course is strongly aimed at the acquisition of skills and knowledge in art praxis.

Target Audience: For art lovers or artists who want to learn more about colour theory in art; about how the right colour relationships can improve the quality of the artwork; how to implement effective colour relationships; and colour psychology.

Course Duration: It is difficult to determine how long it will take you to complete the course. The average time to read through the tutorial material is about 3 hours, but it can be longer, depending on how much time you spend on the links. This Module also has an assignment  to complete, which takes a variable amount on time.

MODULE DESCRIPTION:
This module investigates colour as a fundamental formal element in the making of an artwork. The Newton colour wheel is considered, as well as colour theory, colour terminology and mythology. Application of these aspects is done in older and contemporary artworks.


What you will learn:

Colour theory, the colour wheel, families of colour, context, contrast 
Mythology of colour, conceptual colour

 

Work through Notes on colour.

There is a practical Assignment for this module. It is not compulsory.

Module 1.2: Composition

MODULE DESCRIPTION:
This module looks at fundamental compositional terms, the role of purpose in composition, compositional techniques and the application of these to artworks.  The rule of 'thirds' is looked at, as well as how to break this rule.


What you will learn:

Compositional theory
The design aspects relating to composition, including 
focal point, rhythm, contrast, movement, unity, balance, pattern.

Compositing in digital contexts.

In this module we look at markmaking as a fundamental formal element of an artwork. Different kinds of marks are investigated in terms of how they generate meaning and conceptual association. We consider expressive markmaking, angular marks, juxtaposition, doodling and writing as 'mark' in art.

Different kinds of marks and their meaning

How to generate mood and content through markmaking

The value of doodling as a free form of markmaking

This module guides you to understand methodologies of perspective. We look at one-point, two-point and three-point perspective, as well as foreshortening. The module teaches you how perspective creates content  through the aspects of viewpoint and angle.

The scientific principles of one-point, two-point and three-point perspective

The function of and conceptual content in aerial perspective

The function of and conceptual content in foreshortening as a technical device in art

Module 1.5: Space

Target Audience: Artists or people interested in art who want to understand the important aspect of space and spatiality in art. 

​

Course Duration: It is difficult to determine how long it will take you to complete the course. The average time to read through the tutorial material is about 4 hours, but it can be longer, depending on how much time you spend on the links. There is quite a lot of reading to do on this module, so it can take you long to read through everything. Part of the study material is a pdf of a whole book on space.

MODULE DESCRIPTION:
This module looks at spatiality in art, different cultural theories on space, spatial metaphor and the semantics of psychospace. We consider positive and negative space; closed and open space; shallow and deep space;  spatial duality; Self and Other in space; real and imagined space; space as home; urban space; and non-place.


What you will learn:

The formal aspects of space rendering in an artwork, including positive and negative space, closed and open space;

How to create a more meaningful spatial component in your work;

How to understand space and place in art in general;

The difference between space and place, and space as an imagined place;

The meaning of psychospace and how it is created and functions in art.
